Roller blinds
The Pakenham workhorse. Blockout, light-filter, sunscreen or double roller (sunscreen plus blockout on one bracket). Hundreds of fabrics, cordless and motorised. About $120 to $320 per window.
See roller blinds →Venetian blinds
Tilting slats give you light and privacy on the same blind. Aluminium for wet areas and rentals, painted basswood for living rooms. About $130 to $520 per window depending on material.
See venetian blinds →Vertical blinds
Still the most practical answer for wide sliding doors and the tall stacker windows in new estate homes. Slats stack clear of the opening. About $150 to $380 per window.
See vertical blinds →Honeycomb blinds
Cellular fabric traps an insulating air pocket, so these are the best performer against Pakenham heat, winter heat loss and estate-home condensation. About $220 to $480 per window.
See honeycomb blinds →Motorised blinds
Quiet battery or hardwired motors, app and voice control, sun and timer automation. Ideal for high stairwell windows, wide living spans and child-safe bedrooms. Adds about $150 to $350 per blind.

Afternoon glare on small estate blocks.
Pakenham sits about 55km south-east of the Melbourne CBD and cops the same hot, dry northerly spells the rest of the south-east does, regularly pushing past 35 degrees through January and February. What makes the newer estates harder than older streets is the geometry: blocks in Cardinia Lakes, Arena, Heritage Springs, Lakeside and Riverbank are small, houses sit close together, and eaves are shallow. A west or north-facing living room with a big span of glass and 450mm of eave gets no shade at all from about 3pm. That is where a reflective sunscreen weave earns its money: it cuts glare and blocks most of the UV while you keep the outlook and the daylight. Bedrooms on the same wall want blockout instead. Getting the fabric right per room, rather than putting the same blind on every window, is the single biggest comfort decision in the whole job.
Condensation and heat loss in new double-brick builds.
The flip side of a Pakenham summer is a cold, damp winter, and new estate homes are sealed far tighter than the older weatherboard and brick homes in central Pakenham. Tight homes plus cold glass plus a family breathing, showering and drying washing indoors equals water running down the windows by July. Blinds cannot fix ventilation on their own, but the wrong choice makes it worse and the right one helps. Honeycomb cell blinds hold an insulating air pocket against the glass and cut heat loss noticeably in bedrooms. Fabrics that sit hard against a cold pane and stay damp are the ones that grow mould at the hem. We will tell you plainly which rooms in your home want a cell blind and which are better off with a roller you can lift clear each morning.
Made to measure, not cut to fit.
Plenty of cheap online blinds arrive in standard widths and get trimmed on site, which is why they hang crooked and leak light down the edges. It shows up worst in two places around Pakenham: older weatherboard and brick homes in the town centre where openings are out of square, and new-build reveals where 10mm of plaster tolerance decides whether a blind fits inside the recess or has to go face-fixed. We measure every opening in your home, order each blind to that size, and fit it square. That is the difference between a finish that looks built in and one that looks bought in a box.
