Venetian blinds in Pakenham.

A roller blind gives you one axis of control: up or down. A venetian gives you two. The slats tilt through about 180 degrees, so you can have the blind fully down and still choose between blackout-ish closed, a slight crack that lets light in and keeps sightlines out, or open flat for the full view. That second axis is the whole argument for a venetian, and it is why they hold on in bathrooms, kitchens and studies where the light and privacy requirement changes hour to hour.

The other trick is upward tilt. Angle the slats so they face up and the low afternoon sun bounces off them onto the ceiling. The room stays bright and you stop squinting. On the west-facing living and dining rooms that are so common in the newer Pakenham estates, where shallow eaves give you no protection after about 3pm, that is a genuinely useful thing a flat fabric blind cannot do.

Where they suit in a Pakenham home

Aluminium venetians earn their place in the wet rooms: kitchens above the sink, bathrooms, en suites and laundries. Steam does not bother them, they wipe clean, and the narrow 25mm slat suits the small high windows those rooms usually have. They are also the practical answer in the many rental properties around Pakenham and Officer, because a damaged slat is cheap and quick to sort out between tenancies.

Timber and basswood venetians are a different product doing a different job. Wider 50mm or 63mm slats, painted or stained, and enough visual weight to carry a living room, dining room or a formal front room on their own. They read as furniture rather than a window covering, which is why they suit the older weatherboard and brick homes in central Pakenham as well as they suit a contemporary estate build.

Material and slat options

• Aluminium, 25mm slat: The standard wet-area and rental choice. Light, durable, wipes clean, will not warp. Wide colour range including matt and metallic finishes. About $130 to $300 per window.
• Aluminium, 50mm slat: A wider slat with a softer look, fewer slats across the drop and a clearer view when tilted open. Sits at the upper end of the aluminium band.
• Basswood, 50mm or 63mm: Painted or stained timber. The warmest look and the best sound-deadening of the venetian family. Not for bathrooms. About $250 to $520 per window.
• Faux timber (PVC or composite): Looks close to painted basswood but tolerates moisture, so it works in a family bathroom where real timber would not. Sits between aluminium and basswood on price.

Control options

Venetians have two controls: a tilt (wand or cord) and a lift (cord or cordless). A tilt wand is the safest and most common arrangement, since it removes one cord from the equation straight away. Child safety

Corded internal blinds fall under a mandatory ACCC consumer product safety standard, and venetians historically carried more cord than most products, so this matters here more than anywhere. Every corded venetian we install is fitted with the required cord guides, tension devices and labelling. In any room a child can reach we recommend a wand tilt with cordless lift, or full motorisation, which removes the hazard rather than managing it.

Looking after them

Tilt the slats closed, run a duster or vacuum brush head across the whole face, then reverse the tilt and do the other side. Once a month keeps it easy; leave it six months and it becomes a job. Aluminium slats take a damp cloth with mild detergent, and a badly marked aluminium blind can be taken down and washed carefully. Timber and basswood slats should only be dusted or wiped with a barely damp cloth and dried straight away, because standing moisture will lift the finish and eventually warp the slat.
